Family-controlled businesses appointing a first external chief executive follow a recognisable arc: eighteen months of deference, a rupture over capital allocation, and then either a real handover of decision rights or a quiet reversal.
The firms that make it through the rupture had written down which decisions the family retained — before the appointment, not after it.
